I want people to feel like they're seen.
I want people to feel like they're heard.
I want them to feel like they matter and that they're understood.
I've spent a lot of years in my life feeling misunderstood.
Feeling like I don't have a place.
I've been ambitious, I've worked hard and fought to make things happen.
But in my heart, I haven't felt like I make sense.
Things started to change for me when I started to see my life as a story.
I started to listen to myself. I started to see myself.
When you start to see yourself, you can take responsibility.
You can do beautiful things.
You can start to heal some things that might have hurt you.
You can get stronger.
You can engage your courage and do things that are hard, but worth it.
When you see yourself, you see how beautiful and important you are.
You see that your sensitivity and your fragility and the things that you're afraid of are beautiful and useful.
When you start to hear yourself, you start to hear the kind of words that you're using.
The tone of voice you're using when you speak to yourself and other people.
The types of words that you're choosing to describe your life, are you using words like,
beautiful and grateful
and joyous and free
and able and connected
and worth it and radical and cool?
Or are you using words like
not worth it
You know what?
I don't think there's anything wrong with either the light or the dark of our language.
Whether we say that our life is beautiful or our life is hard.
I think in any given moment it can be either of those things or many other things.
The art that I make is a way of visually showing the landscape of our emotional experiences and to show that everything, in the end when you zoom back, makes sense, together.
You make sense. You know what you're doing.
You make sense. You're a human being.
You're built with a brain and a heart and emotions and experiences and perception and interpretation and expression and the ability to create in response to those things.
Your heart knows what it wants to make.
Your heart knows what it wants to say and your heart knows what it wants to do.
Take a breath, be still.
