Mental health is a taboo topic. People don’t know how to talk about it in a helpful and effective way, so they just don’t talk about it.

This has to change. We need to talk about this. Flutter Lyon is here to bring mental health to dinner table discussions.

On Wednesday 16 August, Flutter Lyon is a hosting a workshop to teach 120 people a fun new way to talk about feelings and emotions. Held at COMMUNE Waterloo this event will challenge your preconceptions about what a conversation around mental health looks like. Filled with confetti, music and ink-filled syringes this is an experience that will knock your socks off.

What you will experience

  • Learn a new art form called Life Pressing and make 4 artworks about your own life stories on the night
  • Share a few stories of courage and freedom - and see how cool our lives really are, right now
  • Step into the fluttering gold confetti-filled Joy Room and feel your heart sing
  • Hear talks on the power of art for our health and the ways it can bring together friends, families and communities to help us strengthen and support each other to have greater mental health

Why this work is important

Talking about mental health is more than saying “I’m depressed” or “I’m anxious”; it’s a complex discussion. It changes from one moment in time to another. It can be scary and it can be fascinating all in one. One in five Australians experience a mental health condition in a given year and almost one in two will experience a mental health condition at some point in their lifetime[1]. People are feeling it, so let’s start talking about it.

During this event you will learn how to use art to share stories and have conversations about the things that matter in your life. Find new ways to record stories from your life and celebrate your achievements. Discover the power of art for our health and the ways it can bring together friends, families and communities to help us strengthen and support each other to have greater mental health.

This event is just the beginning. That night we will also be launching a Kickstarter campaign for our new project that will bring this practice into thousands of homes across the world. This project has been awarded a MATCH grant by Creative Partnerships Australia and will provide people with everything they need to change the way they have conversations with their friends and family about mental health.
